The rules of Star Battle are elegantly simple, which is part of what makes this puzzle so appealing. Unlike puzzles that require memorizing complex rulesets, Star Battle can be explained in under a minute - but mastering it takes much longer.

The Four Rules of Star Battle

Every standard Star Battle puzzle follows these four rules:

Rule 1: Two Stars Per Row

Each horizontal row in the grid must contain exactly two stars. Not one, not three - exactly two. This applies to every row without exception.

Rule 2: Two Stars Per Column

Each vertical column must also contain exactly two stars. Combined with Rule 1, this means a 10x10 grid will always have exactly 20 stars total.

Rule 3: Two Stars Per Region

The grid is divided into outlined regions (sometimes called cages, areas, or zones). Each region must contain exactly two stars, regardless of its size or shape.

Rule 4: Stars Cannot Touch

This rule, together with the two-star count, gives the puzzle its alternate name "Two Not Touch" - stars cannot be adjacent to each other, not even diagonally. Each star must be completely surrounded by empty cells.

Examples

Valid Star Placements

Two stars are validly placed when:

  • They don't share an edge or a corner. Any gap of at least one cell, in any direction, is fine.

Invalid Star Placements

Stars are invalidly placed when:

  • They're in horizontally adjacent cells (side by side)
  • They're in vertically adjacent cells (above/below)
  • They're in diagonally adjacent cells (corner to corner)

Variations You Might Encounter

While standard Star Battle uses 2 stars per row/column/region, some variations exist:

  • 1-Star Battle - Only 1 star per row/column/region (usually smaller grids)
  • 3-Star Battle - 3 stars per row/column/region (larger, more difficult grids)

At TryHard Puzzles, we focus on the classic 2-star format, which offers the best balance of challenge and accessibility.

What Makes a Valid Puzzle?

A properly designed Star Battle puzzle has:

  • Exactly one solution - There's only one correct arrangement of stars
  • No guessing required - The solution can be found through pure logic
  • Proper region design - Every region has room for exactly 2 non-adjacent stars

All puzzles at TryHard Puzzles are computer-verified to meet these criteria.

Quick Reference Card

Here's a summary you can reference while playing:

  • Place 2 stars in every row
  • Place 2 stars in every column
  • Place 2 stars in every region
  • Stars cannot touch - not even diagonally
