Slide-puzzle golf · Three runs every day

Slidesmith: slide the tiles, beat par.

Slide tiles across a 5×5 board to build five small patterns, one after another, on a board that never resets. Your score is how many moves it took. Par is set before you start, and there is no clock.

A demo board: Twenty-four tiles, three colours, one gap. It slides in. One move. Three tiles slide together. Still one move. Red, yellow, green in a row: pattern built.

The whole game

How it works

  1. 1

    Slide.

Tap any tile in line with the gap. Every tile between them slides one step. One tap is one move, however many tiles move.

  2. 2

    Build.

Each round shows a small pattern. Make it anywhere on the board, exactly as drawn, and the round is done.

  3. 3

    Look ahead.

The next pattern is shown beside the current one. The board carries over, so how you finish one round is how you start the next.

  4. 4

    Score low.

Five rounds make a run. Fewest moves wins, and par is the number to beat.

The score

What par means

Before a run goes live, the server plays it, each round in the fewest moves possible. The total is par. You see it before your first move, and it never changes.

Par is fair on every tier. Play each round in its fewest moves and you land on par, whichever shortest finish you pick. The walls block slides, but they never make a round longer.

Beating par is possible, and rare. It means spending a move in one round to make a later round cheaper. When someone does it, the server replays their line to check it, and the next day's route page shows how many players beat it and the best score.

Why you'll come back

Three new runs a day.

Easy, medium and hard, new at midnight UTC. Easy takes a few minutes. Hard takes some thought.

A streak to keep.

Clear any run each day and your Slidesmith streak grows. A free account keeps it on every device.

A par to chase.

Replays are unlimited and only your best run counts. The second try, when you know which five patterns are coming, is where par starts to look close.

A result worth sharing.

Your result copies as one line of marks, one per round. Green means you played that round in the fewest moves you could, gold means one or two over, red means more. A circle means you were still on pace for par; a square means you had already fallen behind. Five green circles is a par run.

The par line, the next day.

Every run's shortest line opens the day after, one board per move, so you can see where your moves went.

Slidesmith FAQ

How do you play Slidesmith?

Tap a tile in the same row or column as the gap, and every tile between them slides one step toward the gap. Use those slides to build the pattern shown, anywhere on the board. Build five patterns in as few moves as you can.

What does par mean in Slidesmith?

Par is the fewest moves for each round, added up across all five. It is worked out before the run goes live and never changes. Play every round in its fewest moves and you finish on par.

Can you beat par?

Sometimes. Par plays one round at a time, so spending a move early to set up a later round can bring you in under it. Under-par lines are checked by the server and credited on the next day's route page.

Is Slidesmith free?

Yes. Every run is free to play in your browser, with no app and no account. A free account saves your best scores and your streak across devices.

How many Slidesmith puzzles are there a day?

Three: easy, medium and hard, released at midnight UTC. Easy par is usually 5 to 7 moves, medium 9 to 12, hard 12 to 15. Every past run stays playable in the archive.

Can I replay a run?

As often as you like. Only your best run counts, so a replay can only help your score.

What are the dark bars on the board?

Walls. Nothing slides through a wall, just like the edge of the board. They change every day, stay put for the whole run, and never make a round longer than it would be without them.

Three fresh runs drop every day.
